Alabama Ranks No 1: In Mercury Pollution

Alabama Ranks No 1: In Mercury Pollution November 21st, 2008 Glynn Wilson Alabama Power’s Miller Steam Plant on the Locust Fork fouls the air and water… by Glynn Wilson What do you know? Alabama is number one in something besides football: Mercury pollution. And the source of that pollution just happens to be located along the river that inspired the creation of this independent online news outlet, The Locust Fork River. Alabama can now brag that it is among the “Dirty Dozen” states in th

Priorities for the Alabama Legislature

Under the best of conditions the Alabama Legislature can only do so much -- and most years they do a lot less -- so they definitely need to prioritize their work and focus on important things first. I'm glad that removing the sales tax on groceries is high on the list, at least for Democrats. There's every reason to make the grocery tax repeal a legislative priority this year. It's a real problem, affects big numbers of Alabamians and corrective action is within the power of the legislatu

Senator Shelby owes Michigan an apology

Senator Shelby from Alabama has been pretty outspoken in his opinion that the Big Three shouldn't receive financial aid from Washington. He had this to say on Meet the Press recently: This is a dead-end, it's a road to nowhere, and it's a big burden on the American taxpayer. And this: We don't need government--governmental subsidies for manufacturing in this country. It's the French model, it's the wrong road, we will pay for it. The average American taxpayer is going to pay dearly for this, if I'm

Coming to a pub near you?

I don’t know about you, but out here in the Philadelphia exurbs we are in the grip of the nice of crisis that brings the area to its knees— about four more inches of snow than apparently anyone expected. Surely that means it’s time for another “church that meets in a pub” story courtesy of correspondent Katie Liesener of the Boston Globe. This frothy brew also raises some of the same questions as did Tmatt’s “open communion” post of a few weeks ago. Prepare to have your mind boggled — pa

Friday Reading Round-Up

So, I’ve been hankering to read PD James’s Private Patient, but what is the deal with not having it in Kindle version? The Lighthouse (James’s last book) was in Kindle version. Driving me crazy. I may have to actually steer to a B&M bookstore to pick up this book. Always adore me some PD James. Okay, just discovered AMC’s Mad Men. We don’t have cable, but I just got the first season on Netflix. Oh boy, I think I’m completely addicted. Jon Hamm as Don Draper is so good. During the first epis

Lakers, Celtics Look Finals-Worthy Again With Rout of Rivals

Last season’s two NBA finalists won games Thursday night that were about as significant as you’ll find on a schedule that runs through June and is only one-eighth completed. The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns, the team that ousted the Lakers in the first round of the 2006 and 2007 playoffs but has aged and slowed since then by acquiring former Laker Shaquille O’Neal. And the Boston Celtics routed the Detroit Pistons, their nemesis in the Eastern Conference finals last season that has

Weekend Conference Previews: TTU/OU, PSU/MSU highlight big weekend

We're starting to receive down to the last week or two of football in most of the major conferences. There's still a lot to be decided, however, and this weekend includes some of the biggest games of the year. Here's a look at the best games in every conference this weekend: ACC Georgia Tech threw another monkey wrench into the already complex ACC Title picture by blowing out Miami Thursday night. With that game already in the books, the next biggest game is Florida State (7-3, 4-3) visiting Mar

Go Cougs! OBNUG’s Week 13 cheering guide

Which teams should Bronco Nation be rooting for this weekend? Beats us. We can???t figure it out. There are way too many of them. Help us, Stephen Grettenberg. You???re our only wish. The weekend’s best game might be No. 2 Texas Tech at No. 4 Oklahoma, but there are a lot of games more important to Boise State???s chances at the BCS. After listing the relevant games, I break out the BCS rankings and the conference scenarios to figure out the convoluted and sometimes fickle ways things could

Bad Week In The PAC-10

by Cub Buenning The University of Arizona put the finishing touches on an embarrassing “snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” game with the Blazers of University of Alabama-Birmingham on Tues. An upsetting defeat not because of the talent of the opponent–the Blazers of UAB are legitimate threats to anyone, on any night–but more for how the Wildcats’ concluding seconds concluded ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon. Two immature intentional fouls were somehow allowed to happen and Arizona, again, loss an

Former Top Editor Blasts Time Inc. Layoffs, Conde Loses the Town Car

It's getting ugly out there in layoff land. Former Time Inc. top editor Susan Haynes — she was at Coastal Living for many years — penned a particularly vitriolic email to the London-based Executive Vice President Sylvia Auton this week. Auton is head of Time Inc.'s lifestyle group and therefore in charge of the layoffs (from a distance) at the difficult hit Southern Progress division. Per the email:I don't know what Time Inc.'s master plan is — or if you even have one, but from any standpoint, busin

China Targets U.S. Computers For Espionage, Report Warns

China Targets U.S. Computers For Espionage, Report Warns Chinese cyberattacks on civilian, government, and military networks are rising, a congressional advisory committee warned in a report released Thursday, and the United States needs to bolster its defenses and engage with allies and Chinese authorities to clarify the consequences of aggression in cyberspace. "China is targeting U.S. government and commercial computers for espionage," says the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commi

An off the field issue (I am making air quotes) led Jamar to N’ East CC and this season Hornsby let the relax of the country know that he is still around. “Alabama is another program I am looking at difficult. To Kill a Mockingbird and Barack Obama

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel was published in 1960. You know the story, don’t you? The setting is the fictional town Maycomb in Maycomb County in south Alabama. Harper Lee is actually grew up in my home town of Monroeville, Alabama (Monroe County) which is the basis for the book, as is her family and childhood pal Truman Capote. I still remember when Gregory Peck came to Monroeville in preparation for the making of the move To Kill a Mockingbird. Caused quite a good stir and m

No Bama = Vampires, Pirates, and Crapples

What's a girl to do during an Alabama bye week? While I will miss heading down to Tuscaloosa to watch my Crimson Tide play, I will also take the time to like the week off and do as Coach Saban would want me to do--relax and like myself, but also keep my focus!! (And, believe you me, I now follow pretty much whatever instructions Saban gives to me. After last week's call to arms, I was at the Mississippi State game with my loudest cheers of the season!) I will stay focused on the task at hand

Kicked out of church for writing a vampire novel

According to the November issue of Locus, author J. F. Lewis was "excommunicated from his church in response to his debut vampire novel Staked." Over on the Asimov's forum, Lewis writes that excommunicated isn't the correct term, because the non-denominational church instead "withdrew fellowship from rather than 'excommunicated' me." Lewis adds that the elders of his church believe that "by writing the book, I committed the sins contained within it. They also felt that I'd aimed the novel at yo

It’s so obvious

Confederate Yankee reports: “I could sell a hundred ARs an hour, if I had them.” That was the word from the man behind the counter at my local gun store yesterday afternoon when I stopped in. As if to put an exclaimation point on his claim, two men added their names to an ever-growing waiting list to purchase AR-15 carbines within minutes of my entering the store. Fears of an Obama administration attempt to lift prohibitive taxes and reinstate bans on so-called “assault weapons” and standar
